EMU: Self-propelled electric train, 3-coach units expandable to 12; Mumbai has 12-coach max.
An electric multiple unit or EMU is a multiple unit train consisting of self-propelled carriages, using electricity as the motive power. An EMU requires no separate locomotive, as electric traction motors are incorporated within one or a number of the carriages. EMUs are popular on commuter and suburban rail networks around the world due to their fast acceleration and pollution-free operation. One unit generally consists of three coaches of which one motor coach and shown by nomenclature like 1 (MC) +2 (TC). These are multiplied as two, three or four making it a 6/9/12 coach train as generally mentioned at the front of the train.
